In the golden age of tape recording, the original 351-style tube preamp became the king of studio technology, giving artists like Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby, Les Paul, Nat King Cole, Roy Orbison, and producers such as Steve Albini - a timeless sound that is still chased by the masters of audio engineering today. With high-quality components, a circuit design faithful to the original, and selectable tape saturation, the WA-2MPX faithfully reproduces all of the original analog vibe, adding classic warmth and color to your mix.
The WA-MPX preamps are hand-wired with 100% discrete electronics. Each channel has 3 tubes, and with the high gain switch on, delivers a staggering 90dB of gain. Each channel features custom-wound large-core CineMag transformers on the inputs and outputs, which takes the preamp circuitry up to 300V. WA-MPX pres are housed in a steel chassis with a brushed aluminum faceplate, vintage-style knobs and his amber meters. All of these key components, combined with traditional construction, not only provide a classic 'tape age' tube preamp, but one of the best value all-tube mic preamps available today. Following Warm's formula for staying faithful to classic sounds with premium components, every WA-MPX is meticulously hand inspected and tested at Warm Audio headquarters in Austin, Texas.
A Tube-Based Tone-Shaping Workstation
As a premium tube mic preamp, the WA-2MPX offers a wide range of analog tones. From clean volume that retains the clarity of quieter sources, to rich distortions as a result of saturating the tubes. WA-2MPX features a key set of controls such as input impedance switching, +48V, polarity inversion, and input/output gain to meet the requirements of everyday pro audio use. In addition to an 80Hz highpass filter that helps suppress unwanted low frequencies, the WA-2MPX also features a 2kHz lowpass filter to roll off harsh high frequencies for a more vintage sound. The classic Warm Audio's 'Tone' control changes the impedance of the input transformer for added analog tone. The 'High Gain' control kicks in an additional 20dB of tube gain, boosting the WA-2MPX up to 90dB- incredibly useful for low output dynamic and ribbon mics. Finally, WA-2MPX's Tape Saturation switch activates discrete circuitry in the signal path, adding natural compression, harmonic distortion and focused tone filtering to emulate the sound of a tape machine running at 15 IPS- giving a signal the perfect amount of imperfection, especially on program material when mixing and mastering.

The history of the CineMag Transformer dates back to the 1940's and was associated with some of the most popular audio equipment of the last century. The CineMag output transformers in the WA-2MPX pre is custom wound with a very large core. As with all CineMags, WA-2MPX's input and output transformers are made in the USA and manufactured to exacting standards. The huge headroom and additional analog color of the transformers blend beautifully with the select tubes in the WA-2MPX.
